I have a 55 gallon with plants, a blugill, a channel cat and a crayfish, all locally caught. I've had some problems with some plants uprooting, so my suggestions are this:
1. Use 3-4 inches of substrate, the deeper gravel will give plenty of room for good root growth.
2. Plant the tank a couple of months before stocking, to give th plants time to grow some good rootwork.
3. Bluegill will eat plants. I didn't think so at first, but have firsthand witnessed them doing it. The bullheads will root around and uproot or destroy plants. If you want a larger fish, stock several crappie and a few pumpkinseed. They don't seem to be to detrimental to plants, and the pumpinseed are far more beautifull than the bluegills. Crappie are gorgeous animal too. Just remember that these fish get big, I've caught crappie up to 20" before, and that was alot of fish. I've never kept crappie, but they might not take prepared foods to well. So be prepared to feed live if you have too. They'll eat worms and minnows, your local bait store will be your best freinds.
Any other questions, please feel free to ask.
