Plants in a hangon back filter ? Has anyone tried it ? I was thinking of getting some mangrove trees to put in my tank. Dont want to buy a refugium. Have old HOB kicking around. Maybe just run sponge and have the plant on the sponge in it ? Anyone tried this before?

I tried it, I used lizard's tail, and it didn't work out well.99% of the plant had died before I gave up. I'm not sure if it was not enough light, or too rapid of flow through the roots. they were planted in pond matrix.
on the plus side, they do well inside the tank so I was able to save the entire clump, they're just all about 6" tall now with tiny leaves.
I had them in a emperor 400.
I expect to have spider plants rooted in my overflow in a month or two. they'll be by the window so I expect better results.

I have lucky bamboo in my ac110's with no issues at all.

In f1 vet's pothos thread someone said they put their pothos in an aquaclear 70 with a sponge as a plant only filter.

I will be doing this today!!!... pothos in ac70's and cascade 300"s...:)

Pothos... gotta love it.

Yes this works, but they do not require an hob to thrive, simply suspend them in the tank or sump!

I was wondering this myself but with Bamboo. Thinking of wedging it between the canopy and lip of the filter where the water pours into the tank, since its close to the light. Or stick it in the back of the filter like your thinking. F1's pothos thread should have most the info your looking for. Its a very interesting read actualy. He does some good work on here.

There is a thread called "why isn't everyone using plant only filtration" or something like that and I believe it was by jk47 which had examples of plants in hobs.
