Plants in your hang on back filter ?

Mangrove needs lots of root room, and will need a mush larger space than a HOB.
I would agree with F1Vet on this, especially if you use mangrove.
I use pothos, papyrus, and emergent sword plants directly in the tank, and hyacinth in window placed sumps.

I just started trying to work some plants/pothos in my hob, bamboo I have In 2 tanks just the leaves out the tank top,along the back, extra long stalk

i have used lucky bamboo and Pothos with great success .. i used bamboo directly along the back wall in a Oscar setup looked odd but worked out for the best.
