Hello, I am looking for some suggestions on what type of plants would be best for nitrate reduction. I am adding a little 10 gallon sump on to my 240 gallon. This tank has 2 fx5 filters that keep it at zero amonia, zero nitrites, but has high nitrates do to lack of water changes.

What I had in mind originaly was just a 10 gallon sump with many seperators and heavy lighting to support massive algae growth. Just the same type that naturally occurs in the tank.

However I am open to suggestions on any other plants or ideas for nitrate reduction. I am aware water changes are a great solution, but I need no counsil on water changes as this is going to be a fun little project to see if I can naturally reduce the nitrates.

I will say that the lighting is a 24" T-5 high output 4 bulb with 2 10k's and 2 actinic. Average Temp of Tank is 85 Degrees. No co2 will be used to enrich plant growth what so ever. I will use no chemicals or nitratesorb type products.

Thanks!

Pothos, very good for nitrate reduction and grow with very little light. Click the link in my Sig for my sticky on POTHOS !

You just gave me one hell of a great Idea. Applause to you!

Now, I will do some research of my own but while I have you... I will use your knowledge.

I still want to put them in the sump rather than main tank. It is dark in the cabinet where the sump will be. What kind of light scedual should I use to optimize growth. Also should I include an airstone to aerate the root system.

BTW love the driftwood the crawfish is climbing on in your thread. I have similar taste.

Thanks bud, any light will work, I use a cheap 9 watt cfl. Nope no aeration necessary! Very easy plant to grow!

Any further questions address me in the sticky :)

F1 when you die you will be remembered for your pothos thread. I love how people react to it. Eureka!

Pothos does like their roots in flowing water better than stagnant water. As far as ease of maintenance I think you will have a very hard time finding any plants easier than Pothos to grow.

+1 and I can't find a better plant for n03 reduction.

a simple 8$ solution to cutting wc down! Economical/simple and the plant basically grows no matter what!

It's just easy, that's why its popular!
