you dont need special substrate. heck you can do a planted tank with no substrate. give us more info on your tanks?

ive done mine with no substrate just gravel ive done it for someone else before and it worked fine the plants did not die or what so ever.
what i did was get some brown dead leaf from existing aquarium and puting it at the bottom of the tank the cover it up with gravel the place all the plants in the tank the plants will eventually get their nutrients for the dead leaf and poop of livestock in your tank
