Plants

Fully aquatic plants are the best for aquariums, and terestrial plants are the worst. If you want to just have plants there are a few things that we need to know in order to help guide you. Lighting, tank size, substrate type, water params... etc.

i ment: what kinds of fully aquatic plants are the best and worst for aquariums?
i have a fully aquatic plant in my tank that im told is a sword. my fish like it and its very healthy, but i wasn't really wondering for my tank i was kinda just wondering in general. just to see what some people's opinions were. what plants have and haven't worked in other peoples tanks and so on.

Best and worst in what terms?

ease of keeping them?
best for fry protection?
best to oxygenate the water?
best for cichlids?
best for high vs low light? CO2 injection or not?

My best / worst are not necessarily the same as yours or the same as WyldFya's.

All aquatic plant will do well in the proper aquarium conditions. However, your setup, and my setup may not be the same. For instance I have a 135 with 6 watts per gallon, Flourite and onyx substate, Greg watson ferts, Pressurized CO2 and reactor, no air bubbler, timed 12 hour light period. I am guessing that this is your start in planted aquariums?? There are many plants that will grow in my aquarium, but not in another with certain lacking traits, and there are very few that grow well under just a standard 15w light in a 29 gallon aquarium. Swords grow well in very simple conditions, anubias, java moss, and java fern all will grow in similar setups. Post your setup so that we can help you with what plants will and will not do well in your aquarium.

Any plant that is yellow (naturally anyway) to red in color will need around 4wpg -6wpg to keep the intense colorations. Plants are easy to start with, but get more difficult and take more money the more you get into them. I just spent 200 on a DI for my planted tank, as well as new substrate and 100 on some new plants. Plus 100 on a new co2 and got another co2 that was traded for an RO unit. I recently decided to take the plunge and get more into the planted tank... Boy was that a mistake... Now I'm looking at a 225 gallon starfire glass tank to replace the 135.

I hate duck weed. Once introduced, it's hard to get rid of... the same applies to Java moss. Make sure you like it when you first get it ....

When I got duckweed I didn't choose it, but it sure did take over. I lost several plants from it, but now I have finally gotten it out of my tank, nearly 2 months later.

Interestingly enough, my Blue Gourami helped me. I saw them eat some of the leftover duck weed. But it sure is a pain in the butt to get out once it's in the tank...
