Guys take care with those supermarket sponges...in here lots of them come impreganted with chemicals, for dishwashing i guess..

Miguel, These are nylon open weave pot scrubbers, not sponges.

You are right about the sponges tho... Some (cheap ones) will even disintegrate if left in water for long periods.

Dollar general stores...6 for a buck, Big Lots... 6 for $.79.

Dollar general says they will order in bulk for you.

The best ones are found at Big Lots, Dollar Stores, and places like that. The cheaper the better, they don't have detergents.

If you are worried just buy a pack and run some water thru them to see if they make suds.

If your having trouble finding them locally (I sure did), you might try this online link. The nice thing about doitbest is that you can pick up the shipment locally (hardware stores), but still order in bulk (ie: 24 packages for me - grin).

They look like a colorful version of the sponges that usually come in a canister. If you want to grow more aerobic bacteria, why not just add more of the sponges that are cut perfectly to fit the canister? That way you will have no bypass.

If you want to grow anaerobic bacteria (nitrate reducing), you need to add bio-media like Matrix, CellPore, etc.

These are not sponges...open weave nylon construction.

And they work very well for anerobic bacteria just change the enviroment. Expensive media is not necessary for a great filter.

Dr. Joe,
What environment do you put those in to create anaerobic bacteria? You need a very low oxygen environment to produce facultative anaerobes. Maybe if you buried them under a sand substrate....

Might be an interesting experiment to place a sponge-foam mat on the bottom of a tank and cover it with a few inches of sand. The sponge may offer more low-oxygen surface area than sand alone; especially if the anaerobic bacteria starts foaming right at the transition line between sand and sponge.

nylon scubbies are NOT sponges. It is true that sponges can/do home beneficial bacteria, sponges will break down, need to be cleaned and will need to be replaced long before these other medias on the list, and therefore, losing the colony of bacteria. Most of the media on the above posted list, can be used forever.

Scubbies are made from a nylon/plastic material, similar, if not the same, as some of the non-porous bio material that you can buy that is "made" for fish filters. The key to this whole debate is how much surface area the media has for the beneficial bacteria to grow on. The scubbies have the most "bang for the buck".

 You are so vain! :D --the bacterial and the fish don't care. But if you have to use only one color, I know where you can send the ones that do not suit your wet/dry, aquatic, filtering decor!
