bio balls suck and the surface area is a joke compared to pot scrubbies :) as to the question, im thinking they might be the same thing...ive seen the plastic and metal kind, but not nylon/plastic. who knows

I think the effectiveness of the media depends upon its use. I am under the impression that bio-balls work much better than scrubbies as long as they aren't submerged underwater. For submerged media, I would think scrubbies would win... but otherwish bio-balls all the way.

i think you have it backwards :) scrubbies are no good submerged in a canister. in a wet dry filter, they are superior to bio balls. i did run them in a canister once and they got clogged quickly. over a year in my sump and theyve never been cleaned. pre filter them and youll be fine. i wont ever do bio balls again

Send some to me for the 500!!! :grinno:
ill think about it ;) lol still trying to figure out a way to use as many as possible in my sump. its literally a huge sack. the previous owner said he paid over $200 for the bag. i want to use some sort of baskets to put the media in. got any ideas? i dont want to use filter bags...

I've never used scrubbies so for all I know you are right. But... isn't it better to have the larger oxygen filled crevices for water and bacteria to interact that bio-balls have and scrubbies do not? Water has space to "drip" in bio-balls...in scrubbies it does not. Might not matter, but I thought it was more beneficial...am I wrong?

yeah but scrubbies arent exactly solid pieces of sponge or anything like that. theyre a mass of intertwined nylon/plastic threads. the water flows right through, not over or around them.

if you were to take a bio ball and a pot scrubber of exactly the same size, and dip them both in water, it would be easy to see. the bio ball would displace a lot more water meaning it has more SOLID space, which translates into LESS surface area for the bacteria to grow. the pot scrubber would displace less water, meaning more surface area :)
