I want to breed platies for feeders. I have a 10 gallon hex. Would I be able to breed them in this tank with bare bottom and no decorations?

What are some other suggestions for getting these fish to breed?

I am new to this, so any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

no not bare unless u have a live bearer breeder then it would be good but if u dont the fry would need plants to hide in so they wont get eaten so u could have more feeders

Hmm . . . few, if any, of the fry will survive in a 10 hex. Why not just get a 30 gallon tub, put lots of java moss, a simple filter, and about 10 adult platies? That would be a lot more productive than a 10 gallon hex . . .

How to Breed Livebearers for Dummies: Get a male and female. Put them together, wait 4-6 weeks. Presto, 20+ babies. But seriously, if you want feeders, get convicts! They make much more feeders then platies.

i'd suggest cons too, but i think it's easier to have a bunch of platies for the following reasons:
1. less worry about aggression
2. cons have to grow from eggs so it may take a bit longer to reach suitable feeding size
3. cons require more space than a 10 hex (unless you have younger cons)

however, for sheer number of babies, go with cons if you have the space for a couple tanks: one for the parents and the other for the baby's growout tank.

be sure to put in a lot of plants if you go with platies... they tend to eat their young (or at least mine did)

So if I went with cons, I would still need a growout tank for the babies? I have a 28 gallon bowfront that I am now thinking about using as a breeder tank. Now I am not sure if I want cons or platies.

Hey fish on fire, you must be an expert on breeding fish.

My opinion is that you definetly need a plant or two, because the fry will need to hide. And try to get a male and two females.

I'd put some Plants and maybe some Pots (for caves) just for the fry to hide in.
