i use to breed swordtails for color and got multicolors a couple of times but then got bored with them and went to cichlids but i may go back to swordtails soon

I started with 5 platies, 1 male and 4 females. Now there are 30! What can I do to keep the gene pool fresh and prevent inbreeding?

Hey Ewurm, how many gallons is the tank?

I have tried to keep lines fresh. I remove all males and sell them, then rotate new males in from new stock @ lfs. I even buy from different stores to get new lines. I only keep one lmale in the tank at a time. I have had 0 deformed fish, and no disease or casualties so far from the fish I have raised.

Just the way you were doing it is somewhat the way i have bred my angels ..i bought a green terror pair from the same LFS and the genetics was awful i did not know they were a pair probably closely related .. the deformed fins came through on all the babies and from this alone i realized how important to get as far out and away from inbreeding as possible.. i try to buy different ages and different sizes from different sources..i really think thats why the industry suffered great loses in angels populations and weakness for many years.. too close breedings cause too many negatives along with some positives..still have your platy's?

This thread is 2 years old. Surely the platies are food by now.

Bingo! Actually I have two left from two separate lines, but otherwise I wouldn't waste the tankspace.
