I have pool filter sand in my 150 and its fine other than the constant battle to keep my ph above6.0

sorry to derail but you could try adding crushed coral to your filter system to increase your ph

:)

play sand varies by area. if the bag says "do not use in aquariums" I would follow that advice. mine didn't say it and I know others on here use it but not from walmart.

i'm not going to risk it. not for an extra 7$ when i can get 2 bags 5lbs. each of tan ( not sure if its sand or gravel ). i will just get it because i have it in my 5 gal hex and i like it, looks nice with black background........

"(Feel free to use this advice when dating as well)."
 thanks Gr8 :headbang2

i'm not going to use it

Is it in a blue/green bag? That is what I used from Wal Mart. Mine was orange but after I washed it, it turned a solid off-white color. It looks kinda dark until you get it under flourescent lighting. I didn't even read the bag of my sand, but I don't think it will hurt. People told me that play sand is lighter and is easier to get iin your filter impeller. I beg to differ. I had a Whisper 60 (330 gph) on my 20 gallon tank, with the strainer extended all the way down, 1/4 of the way burried in sand. It sucked up some sand, but my filter never got loud nor did my impeller wear out. The only reason I replaced the filter is because I wanted to try an Emperor, so I bought the Emperor 280 from PetSmart. 280 gph still didn't kick up the sand. I also didn't have any trouble with the impeller or a loud motor with the Emperor. The only trouble I had from it was when I was using my Siphon Kleen to stir it. Then I would suck up some sand while I wasn't paying attention, but I don't feel that it's the sand's fault.

If it says don't use it, don't use it. Go to Home Depot and get their play sand. It doesn't say that.

Hey, was a solution.

I have play sand and my filter suck it at times. I already lost on filter... trouble is Africans stur it up... I have cleaned the impeller out once on another one to get the sand out and it worked... saved that filter...

My convicts stir it up too but it doesn't bother my Whisper nor my Emperor. I did ruin an AquaClear and a Penguin with the same sand on the same tank, tho.

What filter do you have that has a guard over the impeller? I don't believe I have ever seen one like that.

Play sand and Pool filter sand are fine. They are both silica sand and don't do a thing to your PH. I've never seen any labels that say they contain pesticide or fungicide in them. Go to Lowes or Home Depot for Quickrete Play sand or a local pool store for Pool filter sand. It might also be worth while to go to you local gardening center and look at their Play sand. Most of what they sell looks like a mix of Pool Filter sand and Play sand, the different size grains help keep it from compacting like straight play sand. You can also get some Malaysian Trumpet Snails they burrow in the sand in the day and come out at night and eat algae and not your plants. Their burrowing habit keeps the sand from compacting and holding any anaerobic air pockets.
