Play sand is THE worst substrate

I agree. Play Sand is definitely the most horrible substrate I've ever used.


@lipadj46- No idea where you are paying 12$ per 50lb but here at Home Depot and Lowe's Play Sand is like 3$ a 50lb back and the Pool Filter Sand (which is 100x better and I recommend and use it) is like 4.10$ 50lb bag.
 
What is it that makes pool sand so much better? Just larger grain size? Because I agree that pool sand is really... really! fine grained...

Yes play sand is around $3 per 50lb at say home depot. Pool filter sand around here (and in my home town) is around $10-$12 at pool supply stores and nursuries. I know people say they can get pfs at home depot but that is not the case around here.

Call another pool store then as sand is still very common if not the most common pool filter media just don't get any of the new fangled sand that comes with chemicals mixed in. In some areas where pools may be more common (south and Ca) you can probably find it at Home depot and walmart and garden stores too.

yes it is larger grained, more uniform and has an angular shape that maximizes "gaps" between particles and allows water flow. Play sand is very very fine grained and has a mixture of different sizes which allow it to pack very tightly and not allow water to flow through.

I strongly disagree......I use it in 2 of my 6 tanks with no issues at all....
