Wow now that brought me into the light.. Thanks very much basslover, tmrow ill go get some sand in my neighbors backyard.. Ill do the cleaning tip that u mentioned..

I used the Multi-Purpose sand from Home Depot or was it Lowe's /doh. But it took awhile to rinse and then i realized i didn't do it enough so had to do a couple of waterchanges before i was pleased with how much free floating particles i could stand to let my filters clean.

I have yet to have to change an impeller since though. Cut Aquaclear Sponges from the AC30-AC50 fit on the intakes of all my filters(Whisper 60, AC 110, Emp 400, Emp 280 and i even put some on my Canister intakes; Eheim 2213 and Fluval 404).

I had to learn the hard way to use pool filter sand with fish that are going to keep your sand stirred up. The pool filter sand is much heavier and doesn't free float in the water after the fish play in it. I set the tank up with play sand that I sifted to remove the larger pebbles and rinsed very good. Then discovered that the fish were keeping that lighter grade of sand stirred up and my brand new AC110 was picking it up. Do yourself a favor and get the pool filter sand. It's $10 for a 50lb bag here. I spent $6 for the play sand and had to work my tail off the get it clean. But just remember, always rinse the sand no matter what kind you decide to use. I thought the pool filter sand was pre rinsed per the person at the pool store but found out that it wasn't when I started adding it to my tank.
