I decided to use playsand as the substrate for my 20 long. Rinsed it out multiple times and poured off the water. It is substantially cleaner than it was straight out of bag, but is still clouding the water. Is there a solution to this? I want to let it settle out, but the current created by the filter (a HOB) seems to keep it circulating. Any help is appreciated as I only put in about half the amount of sand I want in the tank. I'd like to finish adding substrate tomorrow so I can get it planted and aquascaped Sunday.

i had to wait about 2 weeks for it to clear up and i am still stiring things up (2 months later)

Same as above. It's been 6 months and I'm still stirring it up with cleanings. Looks really good and hides debris pretty well.

you been here long enough to see the sand threads.lol
should have got pool sand,i would swap it out but anyways, lol
i would think it will clear up after a few days.
if you add more clean it more this time.
also check my diy thread, last page, how i clean sand, and read how i added it to the tank.might help if you just dump it in.
also do a waterchange or 2 to get rid of some of the cloudy water.
just some ideas

darn it midnight go to sleep!

Thanks, I asked for pool filter sand, but Home Depot didn't have any. Maybe a seasonal item up here? I've skimmed some of your diy stuff, but you seem to be too smart/resourceful to settle for this playsand stuff. At first I tried using a fan- I'd drop a stream of sand in front of the air current and the breeze got rid of the lightest particles. This worked fairly well, but I felt bad blowing a cloud of sand dust into the hall (I live in a dorm).

Well, it was done in my doorway, aiming out into the hall. Hey, I don't want that crap in my room now, do I? The fan idea was modified from gold panning methods used in areas with little water. Air separates out the finer particles and the denser bits fall down.
