Playsand....

I'm just going to go with a more coarse marine sand, I did find some in white, black or blue at the pet store.

huh, i just got the pure white play sand.. i rinsed it out pretty well and put it in the tank and filled it up (125 gal) with 150lbs of sand. And it wasnt even a tiny bit cloudy, i was very happy with it. Ive heard the natural play sand is allot worse then the pure white though. Sorry you guys have so much trouble with it but so far i love it.

Ive started using a mixture of Pea gravel an play/landscaping sand. (found both at Home Depot). Seems to work rather well, at times Ive noticed spots of the sand being dirty. But over all its worked well for me, My fire Eel loves it an my water Parameters stay near perfect.

I run playsand, made that mistake, and had to rinse it very throughly, however after much of a headache, it turned out nicely, I like it now.
Only problem is like said, I'm constantly vaccumming the tank, bc it shows any sort of debris, and of course as with any sand you have to stir it to get the toxic gas bubbles from forming and killing your fish. I think if I replace it I will track down darker sand next time, but I do enjoy the look.

Same for me. It's settled out after two days, but uneaten food and fish crap are too easily visible.

Warning: Playsand often contains antifungal and antibacterial agents in it. Be very careful when using it.

To "play" on the safe side I would highly suggest pool filter sand.

Play sand works quite well. I think the problem you had was assuming it was uncleanable. If you use a gravel siphon and find the right height to suck up the food and excretions than you can keep your tank clean and not let the stuff decay. Water changes won't take out waste. I found play sand works well and looks very nice. I have a dragon goby and he loves the sand, I can suck out the waste with a siphon and my tank smells fine.
