From the pics it apperas to be male
 
so the female's tails are very stubby compared to a male's?
 
its an illustration of a senegal but sexual dimorphism is the same in all
polys and the only sure way to sex them -Anne

i keep reading that 9-10 spines= female and 12-14= male...
mine has 10 spines but we decided its a male based on the anal fin.
What do you think????

u mean dorsal spines? have nothing to do with gender.
anal fin is the only way to tell, AND the fish has to mature enough for the difference to show.

Yea that's what i mean. and i thought that anal fin was the only way to tell but SEVERAL lfs that i have been to i have asked if they knew how to sex them and they told me the dorsal spine thing. and several websites that i have been to say the same thing...
Do you know how old is mature for ropes?

sorry i don't mean 'mature' as in reaching breeding age etc. i was using the term loosely to mean 'when it's grown to a certain age'. babies/juveniles won't show the sexual dimorphism. If you can tell a bichir/ropefish is a male, then it's past that stage. i don't really know offhand what that might be for ropefish.
 
From the pictures, It look like a male rope fish as the anal fin looks big. For a female, it will have smaller anal as posted by beblondie.
