My hat is off to honor your other half, g11king. Just a bit of advice for you from experience though, I had two Oscars a few years back, and had to sell them. They got just to big for the tanks they were in and could not find a large enough one to put them in. I came home to a surprize like you did from work.
My wife knew I wanted Oscars. She got me 2 Tigers, 2 albinos, and 2 Red Oscars all on the same day. I put them in a 75 gallon all at 2 inches long. By the time they were 4 inches long, they all fought with each other and I lost all but 1 Tiger and 1 Albino. I put them both in separate 55 gallon tanks, with a 4 inch banjo cat in each tank. Within 14 months, the Oscars were 18 inches long, and the Banjo Cats were 16 inches long. I was then having to move out of state (a 1500 mile relocation) and I sold all 4 to a guy who had a 500 gallon tank.
I still keep in touch with him and he's paired off both the Albino and the Tiger with females of the same species and he's got little oscars now running around and ready for sale. I guess it was quite a profitable investment for him. Each pair are in their own 300 gal breeding tank and he's really happy.
But my point being is they do grow really fast at a rate of about 1 to 2 inches a month. I'm going to get me another, but just how soon, I'm not sure. Have to discuss it with the wife again. I'd like to get a pair, but they're hard to know or tell which is a male and which is a female. But hey, good luck and I hope your new stock bring you many hours of enjoyment and relaxing days to come.
