PLEASE any help for my wild diatom outbreak

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A GFO reactor gets rid of phosphates and silicates. Something to consider. It would knock the diatoms out in a hurry. But over time they usually go away on their own.

Buying h2o is going to be crzy expensive.

Test your tap for starters...secondly see if this bloom just comes under control. Vacuuming your substrate will speed up this process considerably.

When all else fails, get yourself the RODI unit...if it is indeed your tap h2o that is causing the issue.

Im guessing its deff. the tap causing it. Well and the fact its a new tank. I use rodi, but i was out of it one night and needed to top off a bit and decided to use tap... HORRIBLE. Diatom bloom like crazy. Never again lol :headshake

This is why you always have your tap water analyzed before you use it.

i may potentially have silicates in the tap, i currently live in a rural area and my tap is well water, which is filtered before being available to sinks. RO/DI may be a good option for me in the future, I will be moving soon from the country to the city.

I did an expirament, where i completely covered the tank in towels for 48 hours, and didn't feed the fish at all.

When i took the towels off, the sand was noticeably more clear (white and pretty) and any remaining "stuff" had turned from brown to grey. I thought I had gotten it. Now that i'm back to running with lights again, the bloom came right back and is brown...
