Please Critique my Breeding Setup

Can't seem to find the kids this morning.
There's one she left behind on the spawning site, but I can't seem to find any lurking among the gravel..

Let's hope they're in the cracks of the pea-sized gravel
(& mom didn't end up snacking on them)...

Nah, pops is there, but he hangs out underneath the large piece of driftwood.

Mom is hanging out in the cave (the ceiling of the cave being the spawning site)

I looked for a good long while and noticed 2 or 3 wigglers underneath her.
They're all just buried in the gravel - the gravel is really thin in the cave too - they moved most of it out, and right now the layer is about as thick as the gravel itself.

I was worried she maybe spit them into the intakes.. I really need to cover them, but have nothing to do it with, nor any cash... any DIY ideas for stuff that may be laying around the house?

I included an older pic of the entire tank to illustrate where everything is, etc.
(They re-arranged the whole place themselves. It's a madhouse in there decoration/gravel wise...)

yeah they'll do that to make it more strategic to protect the young...It's amazing how they know to do this instinctively seeings how their brain is smaller than a BB ...

If you can raise the intakes by removing extension that will help, then use an old blue-pad floss filter pad and fashion a temp cover. Nylons from the wifes' drawer works too. You won't be needing to feed for a while so the flow can be slowed without any adverse side effects.

Sponge filter with air pump is the best, if you can swing that

Cool, I changed one of my aqueon filters (in the angelfish tank) and I'm about to cut up the old floss pad & zip tie it to the 55's intake....
I hope I don't get pecked trying to get them on.....

I think I'm going to switch to a sponge filter on the 10 gallon.

Okay, luckily I didn't get attacked, lol.

The intake cover worked like a charm. Just enough material & zip ties to make it work. Thanks for the tip, zennzzo!

Also included a couple pics.
(you can see where they built a divider with the plants, driftwood & gravel! The parents seem to be getting along great regardless.)
1 of them has descriptions of the areas I keep referencing.

I also included a pic of the fry-tank. I used a bunch of mulm (by cleaning out a sponge & media from another filter used in my convict breeding setup) & it seems to be coming along nicely. The water has stayed clear, & the convict are behaving normally inside.
(I have yet to test params here, but it looks to be doing nicely.)

Hopefully I can manufacture a sponge filter real soon, otherwise the Topfin60 is going to have to do the job this time around...

I'm concidering using a sponge filter more & more...

I've just got a couple questions...

Would a Sponge Filter rated for 10 gallons (using a Whisper 10-30 as the airpump & using a diffuser) Really be enough to keep the tank clean?

With this type filtration, what would be a proper water changing schedule?

Would getting a "bigger" sponge filter be better? (maybe a 20 or 30)

Sorry for the questions, when I first learned about filtration it was related piranha keeping, where you can almost never have enough. Using a sponge filter goes against everything I know. That's why I'm so tempted to use the topfin60 or aqueon20 on the 10 gallon fry tank...

going one or two up won't hurt....
see post 11
the one on the left is plenty of sponge filter
I have 2 of the ones on the right and a 2180 on my 225g and it is more than enough for Mom and DAD Jags and all their fry
