you should incorporate a filter sock into the design. best mechanical you can get on a sump, period!

I totally agree, I have seen several awesome tanks here with crystal clear water and most of them use filter socks.

I am actually going to be using one on my 360 gallon soon as I am ready to get it set up.

Looks to me like there is too much water in there and you are gonna risk a flood. The baffle where the plants are is too high
good point. those baffles need to be lowered to catch the water that will drain down the overflow when the pump is shut off

all you have to do is get or make a filter pad and set it on top of your drip plate. I did it with my sump and it works fine.

As for the bio balls if they are going to be submerged I would go with a cheaper alternitive to them such as scrubbies or what ever type od media you prefer. From what I have read bio balls are most effective in drip situations.

Okay, I just finished building my 315G with dual sumps under the tank. I started off using filter socks, 2 on each side and ended up removing them. They clogged way too fast for my taste. If you are building, incorporate overflow boxes into your build and use that area as a mechanical prefilter. It's a lot easier to clean filter boxes then it is to crawl under the tank to clean out filter socks. I built my own sump and ended up tearing it out and replacing it with 2-50G totes that contain poret foam and assorted filtering pads. Water is crystal clear and maintenance is simple. You can see what I ended up with in the thread below. Go toward the end for my newest sump.

I've thought about the need for bio balls in addition to the refugium but what else do I do with the space?

Why not just more refugium...

The end results of bio media / bacteria is nitrates...
The end result of plants is nitrogen (air)...

Thus I see no reason to use bio media in a sump that is equipped as a refugium...

I don't agree at all with the remarks promoting filter socks. Mechanical media functions ideally when it is staged (coarse, medium, fine, micron). Using this approach will remove just as much waste/debris but will do so without reducing flow or clogging up nearly as fast. The danger here is some may wait a long time between cleanings, which is not good, as this leaves waste rotting in the system.

How is it hard to clean filter socks? Just order 10-20 of them and switch them out. Cleaning is no harder than taking one out and putting another in. When you get a stack, throw them in the washing machine with some bleach water.

poret foam is very expensive though
