The problem is when one of you breeds a pair of cichlids then sells them to a lfs then someone else buys them and forgets what they bought and breeds them with one of their fish and so on eventually pure fish are indistinguishable from hybrid fish.

Who forgets what kind fish they buy? :screwy:

So you think that people who breed, keep, and sell flowerhorns, for example, are sinners?

Could you respond to the above question please? TIA

I guess this is good news for me, since I don't like hybrids, I must be as pure as the driven snow!!! Wait 'till my mom here's this, she'll be so proud. ;)

I think you misunderstood me i have no problem with color morths within a particular species, or breeding to bring out certain traits that are desirable. So therefore I have no problem with dogs. Most if not all breeds of dogs originated from one species, which means they are all the same species.

I have endeed up with fish that turned out to be hybrids. When they were young it was impossible to tell and they were sold to me as pure fish as they grew i realized they were hybrids and they had to be destroyed. I wasted a whole year growing them out before becoming entirely convinced that the fish were not of a single species.

This actually happens all the time they may not have forgotten though they may have obtained a phony id from someone or maybe the lfs was just trying make a sale either way.

Think about red devils and midas two very closely related species of the same genus. can you honestly tell me that when you see juv. of either species that you can be 100% confident on what species you are purchasing
I sure as hell know I can't.

I really just need to know what fish you bought that you couldn't tell was a hybrid

I think educating ourselves as "more advanced hobbyists" is a better option than flushing all hybrids

When I see a flowerhorn labeled a Trimac at a LFS I make sure I personally tell the owner that his fish is mislabeled. Most of the time they will change it because over all they are not trying to dupe anyone they just want to sell people the fish they want

By telling people what they can and can not like or keep you are more ignorant than the person selling texas/jackdempseys to their lfs

delgado you have once again typed before thinking or researching

Ty for the moment of entertainment now continue licking the window :-)

For the record I do not only buy wild caught fish, I would actually rather buy good quality captive bred fish for a variety of reasons, price, easier to care for, does not hurt the wild population, etc. But in order for me to get fish that I know are of a single species I have no choice but to spend the extra money and time caring for a fish not acclimated to aquarium life.

If people kept their hybrids to themselves then there would be no need of this thread. The problem is not fh's they are always labeled as such. The problem is when one of you breeds a pair of cichlids then sells them to a lfs then someone else buys them and forgets what they bought and breeds them with one of their fish and so on eventually pure fish are indistinguishable from hybrid fish. This sounds like a ridiculous situation but it happens all the time. That is why I have such a problem with hybrid fish.

you must also consider that most hybrid pairings are non intentional

So if they purchase a RD/Midas hybrid thinking it was a RD and then buy another RD/Midas hybrid thinking it was a RD then as far as they know it's a RD. So in essence to the owners, it's a RD and not a hybrid. But your statement was "people who forget what they bought." Apparently, the people who buy them and breed them are thinking RD not hybrid. And if they are so indistinguishable, what makes them so wrong? You want to be a purist and that's fine, but don't push your beliefs on others that think that hybrids are cool. I don't like Blood Parrots and I don't like how Flowerhorns develop that huge hump on it's head, but that's me. I'm not starting a bonfire rally trying to get them destroyed.

The fact that you started another thread asking people to give up their hybrid to feed to a large catfish is absolutely rediculous! Do you honestly think that people who paid $150 for their Flowerhorn are going to read that thread and think, "Hey! I'm going to fed my very expensive fish to a catfish becuase some guy I've never met say that hybrids suck!"
