PLEASE!!!! Dying turtle!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agreed, keep him out of the water, warm water, open sores, and waste material do not mix.

If you don't have the cash for a vet visit, then best course of action would be damage control. I'd call any vet to get ahold of the meds, but that won't help you at all if neither of you know how to dose a reptile, especially a small one.
I assume he was with another turtle? From now on house separately.

I had a turtle that had an injury that led to something that looked very similar... my vet told me what others have already said, keep him out of the water primarily, just give him a water dish to drink from for most of the day, and he did prescribe a special reptile antibiotic ointment to use. I would imagine that something like an A&D ointment might help, but that's pure speculation. Good luck with it, my turtle turned out fine.

Your going to do this: your going to put your turtle out of the water but on a moist envioroment with paper towels and next your going to put allot of a fatty antibiotic ointemment (for people like B-panthene plus) on your turtle´s tail. I can see by the pics that your turtle´s body wants to regect the dying tissue, it just needs some help doing so. Your turtle HAS salvation. Dont try to desinfect with any agressive stuff like alcool or betadine, and keep your turtle clean. He needs to be out of the water for like 2 days, then put in water to drink and stuff for 1 hour then take him back again for another day. If it goes well your turt should regect that part of the tail in less then one week. Dont try to pull it or anything, its a natural process.

thanks... he has been ina box for like a week with moist t shirts. what is antibiotic ointemment? i cant get him to eat... its been like 2 weeks since ive seen him try to eat but he drinks when i soak him... but yeah where can i get the anibiotic stuff? do i have to go to vet cause im looking for one right now actually. and is his tail gonna fall off? i dont want that because then he will be in a lot of pain right? he looks like hes in pain... always has his head down on the ground when i see him in there... thanks for the help guys.

You DONT need speciality antibiotics! Dont you have around any fat cream used to treat human wounds? It has to be a fatty one because that is what will allow your turtle to separate between the live and the dead tissue. DONT YOU KNOW B-PANTHENE or something similar to it? That is what I use on my animals when I need to and I have great results. Yes the tail is mostly going to fall off, actually most is already dead, and there is nothing you can do to save it, your turtle will live a normal life without its tail. Your turtle is in pain but not lots of it, turtles can tolerate the most horrible wounds you can think off. Your turtle will do just fine even if it hasent eaten nothing, dont handle it more then what is stricly needed so not to waste energy and keep it in the dark. Your turtle apetite will come just as soon its a bit better.
