their is no such thing as a

given that you do it right

by neglecting water changes you making the water very different from the water that come out of your tap, the pH, GH and KH all change the longer you put it off

and when you finally change your water (i.e large water change) you fish go into shock.

its is wise to keep up on water changes

at very minimum 50% a week more is better.

the reason why fish can take neglected water changes is because they can take high nitrate for a short term period

long term wise they will suffer, they may seem ok on the outside but on the inside it is a very differnet story

changing a 45 gal with the right tools should take no longer than 10-15 minutes

which anyone can spare that amount of time

Hit the nail on the head :)

My buddy had a tank with a blue crayfish a catfish and a GT. He never did water changes and the tank seemed great for about a year, then the crayfish died and the cat and GT looked like they were on their last leg. He gave them to me and I had to nurse them back to health for a couple of weeks. If he didn't give them to me they would have died for sure.

A posted a larger write up on this subject. Not performing routine water changes is akin to killing your fish by slow poisoning. Here's the skinny of it:

Brown Blood Disease, Nitrite Poisoning

Known as 'brown blood disease' because the blood turns brown from a increase of methemoglobin. However, methemoglobin causes a more serious problem than changing the color of the blood. It renders the blood unable to carry oxygen, and the fish can literally suffocate even though there is ample oxygen present in the water.

my opinion on this is if you do not want to change your water then dont.. in the end its yourself will be blamed. :FIREdevil

if you do not love or you do not care about your fishes health then you believe what you want in changing the water on your aquarium..

i believe its common sense. :wall:

its like using the same clothes over and over again. :nutkick:

I have been guilty of this, It has even worked on occasion, It is extremely risky. No how well you balance your tank you WILL get eventual build up of nitrates. That can be minimized by growing and removing fast growing plants but believe it or not to keep the tank from suddenly crashing you will end up testing it and messing with it more than if you just did a regular water change schedule.

I do it with all 8 of my tanks.
Top 'em off.
When I get a chance, which is like every three months, I'll do like a 80% water change.
All my fish breed like crazy too.
I can't stop them!
I'm not gonna try to fix what isn't broke.

Now if I had some rays or sensative fish, then that's another story.
(P.S. all I have is cichlids, go figure.)

Thats why your fish go belly up. Its a time bomb waiting to explode.

Thanks for da reply guys, guees I should have mentioned that i only have 3 fish in the tank (2 angels and a pictus). Now that Xmas is over i will do a partial water change soon.

for all of my years having aquariums i have never truly changed the water just filled it up and one of my fish for 5 years only died because my mom accidently boiled him to death
