Hallo,

I bought this Flowerhorn and I think it's a "red dragon" or "rainbow dragon" or a "red pearl"...

Any idea?

Greats

Its not a super red or rainbow king.
It could have ZZmalua in there.
I would bet on Red Dragon ZZ. Heavy red base color and doesnt have the pearls for malau.
Once he fades it will be a bit easier to guestimate the lineage of him.
***Very nice tank btw. He looks like a happy fish.

Thx :) I like very much my FH

I bought him in Italy and he came from Nederlan.

I think it's a red pearl but I'm not shure.

Thx, any other idea?

Not challenging you, or anything, just inquiring as I consider myself rather a newbie at this flowerhorn stuff but ...... what makes you think he will fade ?

He looks mostly ZZ red dragon to my uneducated eye. And most of these will not fade ? yes ? no ?

I cant view the pictures from here. ZZ can be pearly also. If a FH is pearly it doesnt automatically qualify as Malau bro. Just saying... You also have to look at the jaw structure. Protruding lower jaw is heavy in the malau strain.

Great point out Musha! And yes Malau jaw protrude more and also a whole lot thicker than any ZZ believe it or not. As far as fading goes, I highly doubt this fish is going to fade. That would be my guess on this fish. Don't get it wrong, it is possible to fade still even when they hit 6". Most of the one I've seen that fade will peel out anywhere between 2" - 6" and sometimes even 7". But as far as identifying what kind of fish is it exactly after it fades, its a lot more difficult than you think. Even experts have difficulties on it also.
As far as this fish strain goes, possible Malau in him. Very heavy Red ZZ in him for sure due to the longer slim body and the shape of the face. Keep in mind, Red base coloring has nothing to do with identifying them as a Red ZZ or whatsoever. To be honest, Malau true red color is deeper and richer than a Red ZZ for a fact. It will blend right in with a red color crayon I'd tell you what. Nice fish still...take good care of him and keep us updated! :D
