PLEASE HELP ANY ONE.. MY GT IS NOT EATING

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your GT has nematodes...might be capillaria.

Not sure where it comes from but have heard small gt's are bad for it and that it takes a Little before you see the symptoms so it was more then likely there you just couldn't tell.. Mine was fine for a couple weeks after I bought him then he turned almost over night and none of the other fish (2 of which I got at the same time took ill. Don't count him out yet it is hard to beat but always worth a try. Mine fought for a good two months or more before losing the battle but by the time I figured out what it was and what I needed to fix it he had been on the 3-4 week or more mark with no food and I dare say some pretty bad internal damage.
Hexamita is the name of the parasite mine had and I was told to treat with metronidazole.

alot of factors, from the pet shop, your water, other fish you added and did not QT, ect.

Looking for some more info on hexamita. I think my GT had it (he was in a growout with a pink con). He managed to beat it on his own. Now, though, my O has it pretty bad. he hasn't eaten in about 5 days, white poo, swimming backwards. the strange thing is that they were never in the same tank.

Anyway, I took the O out of my main tank, and put him in the growout my GT was in (moved the GT to my main tank). no fish in my main tank is showing any symptoms. My brother is bringing over some metronidazole. I guess my question is, should I treat both tanks (all my fish), or just the O that is sick?

I had a bout of this with my big guy when he was smaller. It was introduced by another newly acquired Texas I had bought.I treated with metronidazole in the tank water and also in his food. The lfs supplied me the metronidazole free as I proved there batch of Texas juvies had it.The biggest problem I had is that my guy wouldn't eat at all so I mixed the metronidazole with his food into a paste form.I then used a small glass eye dropper and forced fed him small amounts daily for a week to ensure I got the meds in his system.I only suggest this as a last resort and when all hope is gone.It is pretty stressful and intrusive on the fish.I then did a large W/C and stopped force feeding him.2 days later he was feeding by himself and I have never had a problem since.I did however lose the Texas.

thanks. I hope I don't have to resort to forcefeeding. what did you do, just soak pellets in medicine until it turned into paste? did you buy paste food? how many times a day did you feed him?

I haven't even tried to feed him since sunday. hopefully he'll be hungry enough to eat a little. where the hell is my brother with the medicine?....

The meds were in tablet form so I ground a quarter of a pill up with some pellets. The meds made up about 10% of the final paste.Add tank water to make a paste just thin enough to pass through the eye dropper. This also allows it to pass through the fish easier.Remember the internals are weakened.I placed the fish on a wet cloth(try to cover his eyes,it will calm him somewhat)Insert the dropper(do not force it in) I found with a little coaxing the fish would open the back of its throat allowing me to insert the dropper about 5mm-1/4".The fish will try to swallow at the same time if you are in far enough.Gently squeeze in the solution paying attention to his stomach area.It will rise slightly if you are successful. They will spit a bit out of thier gills when put back in the tank, this is normal. The trick is to be quick and gentle.I only fed once a day and kept the lights off to keep stress as low as possible. The problem with Metronidazole is that it is not absorbed through the gills very well if at all from my research so try soaking his food in it first and hopefully he will eat some on his own.If all else fails, try force feeding but as I said though, use this as a last resort when you feel you have nothing to lose.

Thanks. hopefully he'll pull through, without the necessity of force feeding.
