I am new here! I have a large green severum in a 55 gallon tank. He is 10 years old and just last night I noticed that he could not stay straight and is not struggling as he lay sideways at the top of the water and floating with the current! I think he is just old and I hate to see him suffer! I was wondering what was the best way to put him out of his misery! In the past I have put my fish in the freezer until they "fall asleep" from the cold and never wake up! I just wanted to know what anybody thought of this?

that is standard euthanization

I have always used the freezer method with large fish. Some people recommend using clove oil in the water to basically knock them out before putting them in the freezer, but I've never used this option.

If you absolutely have to put your fish down... the best way is to put the fish into a bucket, then then add a some clove oil into the bucket... this will knock the fish out, and then you can add more clove oil or use some other method to finish him off once hes out...

Clover oil, it can be used to sedate fish higher dose will put them to sleep for good. Not sure of the dosage though I've never done it. I've only had to put fish down a few times I just use a sharp knife and cut off the head. I've fished my whole life so not a big deal do feel bad though seeing how there my pets not just something I caught.

Why are you giving up on your fish so fast? Have you tried to treat this fish at all? What are you water parameters? What else is in the tank with this fish? What do you feed the fish? Have you noticed what the fish's excrement looks like? Does the fish look bloated at all?

I ask because this could just be a swim balder issue, a treatable bacteria infection, or an internal parasite.

Being slowly froze to death doesn't sound like the way I want to go out.
