Yeah the really good ones dont require tanning ..
But heres an example this fish was 2 years old and looked like this.
The same fish after moving to a outside tank 1 year later..
I think lighting plays a part in the red arowanas color but Iam not too sure.

that's a very big difference but my understanding is if it is tanning, the color will not be perm...

so has the red been maintaining the color

Yeah once you stop tanning color will drop but not a big change.
Yes my friend stopped tanning this fish a awhile back..
But this fish is close to 4 years at this stage color comes out tan or not.
Even my fish I dont tan but usually maintains his colors
 
I know this thread is about Asian Arowanas but do any of these tanning techniques work on a Jardini? I have a baby right now and would like like understand if there's any way to manipulate it's color
