Please help Identify my new Gar.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for your advice and you are all correct as I rang the dealer and he comfirmed it was a gator gar.
So you believe I shouldn't keep it with my other fish in the grow out tank.
I am getting an 8x2x3 but for now he is in an 75g.
Are their suitable tank mates??

1-how big are the tankmates?

2-assuming they are around the same size, the knives are already in danger. i do not know what Boulengerochromis Mirolepis and Gold gibbies are. but how big are they? the p'bass should be fine for a little while assuming they are around the same size.

3-edit:regarding growth rates

It is variable and depends.. on average 2 to 4 inches per month until around 16 inches. Again it is variable...There is no set rule that applies to all situations..
however this was to tropical gars although i believe their growth rates are somewhat similiar. correct me if i'm wrong

4-the 8x2x3, is 2ft width or height? you do know they get to 20+inches within a year if allowed to grow healthily right. eitherways that tank will not hold it in for more than 2-3yrs

5-their max captive size(if allowed to grow healthily) is 4-5ft. are you ready for that?

i am not flaming you mate. i've made as many, if not more mistakes than anyone with these fish. just friendly advise:)

Gator gar...

totally agreed.
if the pbass will be fine, then the boulengerochromis should be fine as well.

Boulengerochromis are known as Emperor Cichlids and Gibbies are Gibbiceps (Sailfin).
All the fish are larger than the gator for know but I will moniter the situation closely.
he is feeding well and keeps out the the other fishes way.
As for the size of the fish I realised it would grow huge but for me it's about the experience and previlage of raising such amazing fish and the pleasure of caring for them.
I will find him a good home if I can't keep and house him properly but the pond is an option.
I live in Melbourne and we don't get snow but it may be too cold for him outside without heating.
What are the lowest temps they can keep at??

i think they can handle much lower temps than tropical fish.
but im not exactly sure on the lowest temp.
good luck finding a new home for him if you cant get a pond.
can be pretty hard.
keep a very close eye on them.
one morning you might just wake up to find half a pbass.:grinno:

Maybe two gators would concentrate on each other rather than their tank mates.
As for outdoor temps I would really like to know what temperatures (Lowest) you can keep them at.
Does anyone know??
I could heat the pond in the winter.

Getting a second gar would just double the things getting eaten in the tank...Dithers don't really work with Gar. They will occasionaly nip each other, but will mostly fucus on potential food.

The lowest i would keep a Gator at would be in the mid to high 50's (for short periods of time). For average temps i would keep them somewhere in the high 60's to high 70's...maybe low 80's, but not for too long.

Nice gator! Good luck with him!
