Hope this is posted in the correct location. I'm new and learning...

We've had this fish since it was a pretty small and it's really huge now. We were told it was a Flowerhorn Fader female. But looking at pictures online, it looks more like a Midas? Tell me what you think and also if it's a male or female. She's never laid eggs so we're curious now. We have a female red devil that lays eggs once in a while.
Thanks in advance!

Amphilophus sp.

Could very well be what they sold it to you as.

I also think it's poor practice to assume every orange-ish colored cichlid with a bump on its head is an Amphilophus species. Nor will I accept that flowerhorns are Amphilophus at all just because they most resemble the Amphilophus shape. There are literally dozens of species of fish used to create different lines of flowerhorns and they could be a hybrid with DNA from multiple genera of cichlids.

Not every flowerhorn looks as nice as the best images you see when you google the variety. For every good looking flowerhorn you see there are dozens of undesirable siblings from the same batch.

Looks like they sold you an undeveloped individual that developed into a fish that, although maybe not as fancy as it could have been, looks very nice in my opinion. He's got great fins, good shape and a nice little nuchal hump. Bet he has an attitude to match his macho appearance.

Nice fish!

So it's a male, eh? We've always said "she", so it's going to be a tough adjustment.
Attitude is putting is nicely lol Water change day is always a fun challenge.
Thanks for the feedback! :)

I can't tell you exactly what if any mix of Amphilophus sp. the fish has but I can tell you it is some type or mix of Amphilophus sp. It's not a gold fish so no, every orange fish isn't an Amph but this is all or at minimum mostly Amph, I'd bet all. Flowerhorn is just another term for designer mutt like a Labradoodle.

Who said it was a male? You can tell it's sex from those pictures.

Rara12 kept saying "He" so I guess I just assumed. Either way, I think it's a beautiful fish. I just always wanted to learn more about it and wondered if it was truly a female Flowerhorn.

I agree that it is most likely what it was sold to you as. The faders can resemble a midas, but as mentioned flowerhorns can be a variety of cichlids...

At this point there is no way o tell wether it is a amphilophus or not, well I think we can be sure it has some amph in it somwhere at least, but it could be a fader or a amph or just a mut. This fish has no tell tail signs or markings so I would wait for some more opinions on these and see where the thread ends up because as we all know amphilopus species can be difficult to tell apart, but this is MFK, this is a large purpose of the forum, so just let the pros answer and tall up the answers at the end lol

Its some type of Amph, although that doesnt mean it not hybrid... Many Amphilophus arent pure bred.

If it isnt fully Amph of some sort, then it at least has a decenf amount in it as it has a very similar look to Midas
