PLEASE HELP if you can!?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tap water, well water, doesn't matter. Still a good idea to let your fish adjust to your waters' natural pH / hardness rather than adjust it with chemicals.

You will need to test your tank waters' ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. I doubt anyone will be able to tell you whats wrong without posting the results of those tests.

Ok i will make sure to get them today ill have to go to my LPS but i have another question should i keep using melafix or use the aquarium salt?? and should i do the water changes now or wait till i get back from LPS?

I'm pretty sure its safe to use salt with Melafix.

You could do a WC now if you want, but you may also want to wait until you test your waters later today, to see what they are at before doing the water change.

Water changes are probably the best thing you can do right now. If your water quality is good, the fish should heal up over time. Melafix and salt should also help...

do i add more melafix or salt after i do water changes or is it best to just wake up in the morning do water change then add?

have had my 55 gallon setup for about a month i do routine water changes once to twice a week! i do not have any sea shells in the water i have 12 fish in it

I see one huge flaw in your system... You have had your tank setup for 1 month(?) and you do 1-2 water changes a week????

IMO, problem #1, you do not change water in a new setup. This retards the development of beneficial bacteria. I'd bet you tank is not properly cycled.
#2 Water changes DO NOT need to be this frequent, moreover on a "lightly" stocked tank, and especially on a new tank. #3 Referring to #1 and as stated above, check your params.... ammonia and nitrites specifically.

Going by the original post, I'm guessing your tank is not cycled. Moreover, if you added 12 fish similar in size to the knife either small or medium sized your tank may not be able to handle the current biological load (lack of cycling).

Also, add some driftwood to your tank, it will soften the water and lower you ph naturally, Peat moss will do the same.

b4 anyone says anything bout the size of the fish i already know how big all of my fish will get! thats why i wanted them is so i have a reason to build a big pond or a huge aquarium in my house! and most of the fish will be moving to a 150gallon soon as they can get bigger! but anyways heres the list!

3 polypterus senegalus
2 pleco(1common,1rubbernose)
2 needlenose
2 clown loaches
1 spotted silver dollar
1 vampire payara
1 clown knife

i did have 2 irridescent sharks that was a little over a inch but i think either the needlenose or the payara mistaked them for feeders!! r.i.p.

Spaceman is probably right, your tank might not have fully cycled yet...

to answer your salt question...once you have added salt to treat the entire tank, only add salt after removing tank water.

Example:
you add salt to treat your 55gallons

a week later 5 gallons has evaporated from the tank so you add 5 more to keep it topped off, do not add salt to this 5gallons you are adding.

when you do water changes, only add salt for the amount removed (if you remove 20g and add 25g, add salt for 20gallons worth).

At least I'm pretty sure thats how it goes, someone correct me if not.
