i bought this young fish as "green acara" (i have two). it is 2.5-3" SL. ive been comparing it to Cichlasoma dimerus, C. bimaculatum, C. portalegrensis, Bujurquina, Krobia, Aequidens michaeli, A. viridis, but they dont seem to match my fish' appearance. my two specimens are currently living with juvies of P. loisellei, P. synspilum, A. centrarchus and H. temporalis (in two separate tanks). TIA

It's definitely not a green acara (Andinoacara sapayensis). I think you are on the right track with one of the port cichlids (Cichlasoma) though from those pics, I couldn't give you a better idea of which one.

yeah kinda looks like a port to me but i could be mistakin. i have one as well.

It's definitely one of the port types, I'm just not sure which one. Maybe you can contact Mahlerfan here on the forum, as he is working with several types of them and has posted multiple threads on how to ID them. Here is a good starting point: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?366569-Identifying-your-Cichlasoma

It should be noted that most of these methods probably won't work on fish with juvenile patterning/coloration. You may have to wait several months before attempting a positive ID.
