I caught this cichlid today in a brackish stream on Oahu. I thought that he may be a red devil (amphilophus labiatus), but he was brown with very dark verticle stripes (not really visible on picture). He also has a dark spot at the upper base of his tail. Sorry for poor quality of pictures, but is this a red devil? What ever it is, any advise? I have him in my 90 gallon south american community.

hard to tell from those pics- but possibly mayan ? cichlasoma urothalmus

Wow, good catch, not sure what it is.

yeah looks kinda like a mayan/ amphilophus hybrid (if thats even possible)... either way its probably going to be a glass banger so maybe not the best tankmate for severums.... its def not pure mayan because of the tail spot and i dont think festaes interbreed with any of the amphilophus do they? time will tell though, will be easier to see once he settles in and shows his colors more (who knows maybe you won the jackpot and caught a pure festae haha)

definetly red devil or rd hybrid

Its hard to say for sure since its unfaded like that. Im sure the answer will be obvious in another month or two.

What stream? The only Amp. I caught on Oahu were in Lake Wilson and in the UH quarry pond. Only one was barred out of 40-50 that I caught. They're definitely red devil and midas mixes, they were released in the 70's and have been there ever since.
