Hi guys, i just got this ornate in yesterday and i found these bruise like markings on both sides of the tail end of its body. Do you think this was cause by physical trauma from shipping and handling or do you think this is a bacterial infection?

Come guys, don't tell me all the experienced Polypterus owners are asleep right now because they reside in Singapore and Japan. Someone help me out. A buddy of mine to me they look like bite marks (physical trauma), that i can handle right now, but if it is bacterial I may have to go to my LFS and get some meds but i need to know what type. Someone help me out before they close.

It might just be from shipping, I've had some shipped to me in super super bad shape. Good water with some salt might do the trick.

That is the protocol I'm following right now

Just do the basics for now... The experts may advise better... I just hope it's not wht I fear... Scale rot

for what it looks like, it might be a bacterial infection.

if i were you i would, (like what the others before said)

1) keep the water in perfect condition
2) quarantine the bichir
3) use aquarium salt

and also i personally would use melafix and stress coat+ as well.

also when you get bichirs that are shipped, its best to also use Prazi pro and let it quarantine for the first 2 weeks, before transfering them to the main tank

You think it is scale rot? I saw another thread with another ornate and it didn't fair to well. Should I get some antibiotics if so what kind?

Also is he WC or CB because I heard WC are more prone to bacterial infection?

it looks Captive Bred to me and that fact regarding WC being more prone to bacterial infection isn't necessarily true. also, i do not think it is scale rot because your ornate isn't losing scales but the red is showing between each scale.
