please help me sex my jag

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Managuense from less than an inch to up to 7" will often turn black for months at a time. It is NOT stress. Its quite common. I've had ten jags and they've all done it at one time or another. They've done it in every kind of situation imaginable. Alone, with larger tankmates, with smaller tankmates, in big tanks, in little tanks. Some darker than others, with more than a few being totally black.

They'll stay dark til they're larger and more confident in themselves and their surroundings. All of the Parachromis change coloration from time to time depending on mood. If you've kept them long enough, you know the amazing difference between normal and breeding dress. The managuense turning dark is absolutely nothing to worry about.

And the dark managuense in the first photo is male. Its all in the face.

thanks for the back up. i understand everyones concern for the jag but i can assure i've been fishkeeping for quite a few years now and i know when a fish is stressed or not, being from the cohabitants, paramaters, lighting etc. this jag isn't stressed and the 3rd photo i posted is when it was about 3". i was just showing how much black it had on it's body even from such a young age.

i believe the darkness will fade as the jag gets bigger but that's why it's making me second guess whether it's a female. i've always had a hunch it was a male ever since i bought it at 2".

Stressed Parachromis will often turn much lighter than normal. Often, badly stressed Parachromis will be nearly white. Dark for jags is normal.

Lol, I was going to guess the other fish pic was around 2". But it looks male there too.

Here are some examples of stressed Parachromis...

Notice the super light (lack of) coloration. This is indicative of a stressed Parachromis. Like I said, the darker coloration is normal and is more indicative of adjusting to their new enviornment.

Here's some more managuense...

I realize these pics don't show just how dark they can be. I've never really saved any pics as they were always rather uninteresting to me. I have a juvenile now (about 4") almost totally black. I'll try to get a pic up.

well i'm pretty definite that mines a male after seing those photo's. to me the head shape (strong curved jaw) has always indicated a male but it's anal fin is still rounded at 6" which was making me think otherwise.
