Hey guys.

I'm 16, maintain a 4.0, and have recently got my first job, at you guessed it, McDonalds.:nilly: I started yesterday. At my interview I specified that I only wanted to work 20 hours a week or so. Well, my first week I am scheduled to work 42 hours!

What should I do? I am mainly concerned about my gpa.

I have been told numerous times in my first 2 days of work by all 3 managers that I am "a great employee", so I also don't want to change this feeling my managers have about me.

I finally want to say that I respect your opinions very much. I already talked it over with my parents, but they are biased because they obviously care more about my grades than me working...

Talk to your manager, i bet they would reduce your hours to a more convenient one or talk to other employees that could take over for you. btw in my psychology class we recently talked about working students...it said that more than 15 hours of work start to hinder on you school mark. I just wanted to share that with you.

In Oregon it is against the law to make a minor work over 35 hours, yet alone 40... Don't be scared and tell them you are a student and have other priorities that come before work.. They will understand, your 16, and you will still be a good employee.. Honest employees last.

Tell them straight up you asked for 20 hours. If you truly asked for 20 hours, and they threw down 42, you have nothing to worry about.

Trust me, if they do not change it, or if they give you crap over it, the job is NOT worth it, and you will end up being miserable there.

School>mccdonalds job

Exactly!! Tell your boss you can't work that much.

Um... ok.

Need i remind you, that you are working at McDonalds????? This isnt your career. Its a burger flipping, do you want fries with that, temporary money making endeavor.

I would have to side STRONGLY with your parents on this one. OF COURSE your grades are more important than your job.

ITS MCDONALDS!!! When you are done with school, the work world is your oyster. You can do anything you want.

Working those hours and sacrificing your grades even for a week is not worth it.
Plus, if you dont speak up now, they might expect you to keep working those hours.

listen to the voice of wisdom, meaning your parents. They know what they are talking about.

and dont be afraid of them firing you for speaking up. I doubt they will, but even if they did, you dont NEED to work.

If you dont need to, and you can just go to school and live off mom and dad's dime while you're there, take advantage of it now. Because it wont last long. Pretty soon you'll depend on your job for food and clothing and a roof over your head.

So this job is not even necessary and you should think of it that way when you go to tell them you want less hours.

:iagree: It's just a job. Tell them 20 and if it don't work out... screw 'em. I know that the change will be nice in your pocket but you are better off investing in your future.

that manager is a douche for giving u 42 hours when u said u could only work 20,
maybe it was a mistake and just ask if he/she realized that they gave u that much, if it was on purpose then say "i can only work 20 b/c grades come first" and if he/she says too bad just walk out and go to burger king or taco bell...
