I think my moto ray is sick and I don't know what to do. For the past 3 weeks he has only been eating 1 to 2 nightcrawlers a day, where before he would eat 6 to 8. Also he has ate nothing for the past 3 days, we have tried to feed him nightcrawlers, raw shrimp, ghost shrimp, and bloodworms. He just lays on top of them and will not eat them. He has remained very active up until today, I have constantly had my water tested and my levels are:
amonia- 8.0 ppm+
nirates-160ppm+
nitrites-0
PH-6.0
My water temp is 82 degrees, i have a 125 gallon aquarium with only him and some gouramis. I have tried salt and something called nitra-zorb. I have also done three 25% water changes on the 14th 16th and 18th and a 30% water change today any help is much appreciated.

With those water test results, I am not sure if you are serious or trying to pull our proverbial legs. If you constantly had your water tested, the person doing the test would have shreaked in horror.

At this point most of us will require a picture of the ray as proof that you are serious. That said, your water needs serious help. It is likely too late to help your ray. Call in to work tomorrow and go get some RO water from the nearest specialty fish store and take them a water sample.

Ok, your problem is real. Test your tap water to make sure it is not loaded with ammonia. 8.0 is pretty toxic but what is keeping your fish alive is the low pH of 6.0. If the pH is allowed to come up, the ammonia will become much more toxic. At a pH of 8.0, everything in your tank will die. Your goal for ammonia should be 0ppm.

Your nitrates are off the chart (so to say). Your goal should be 10ppm or less. Nitrates are toxic at that level and are poisoning your fish.

From here on out, you will need to be very religious with the water changes.

Let me just start by saying that I came to you guys for help because my local fish store ( the people who sold my moto ray to me) do not seem to know what they are talking about. I did a water change with the RO water allready and it has not helped. I am a 50 year old woman who is upset that her moto is possibly dying I would not lie to you...I posted some pics of my ray earlier in the photo lounge.

Some other things,

Expect this to be moved.

Post what you have for equipment (i.e. filter, tank size, etc)

From now on, no more night crawlers. The dirt in their gut contains bacteria, fungus, and all the nasties that you don't want in your tank.

Get a gravel vac and clean the gravel. Your nitrate problem may be partly due to a thick buildup in the gravel.

RO water is reverse osmosis water. It is really pure and will be worth its weight in gold right now. It has a pH of 7.0 and zero nitrates.

Your target water parameters should be:
ammonia 0ppm
nitrites 0ppm
nitrates <20ppm (the lower the better)
pH 7.0 (not so important)

Again, test your tap water and post the results. Hopefully your tap water will be the same as the above target water parameters. If not, we will tell you what you should do.

I am sorry for being doubtful. Some people just have nothing better to do. I already found your pictures and I am certain that you really do need help. Again sorry for the doubt.

also, you really need to find a better fish store. Since they didn't see the problem with the water, that shows their total lack of knowlege. When you are paying a higher price to shop at their store, you are really paying for their experience when you need it. Unfortunately they are not filling their end of the bargain.

I have a 125 gallon with 2 Fluval filters a 305 and a 405 we got rid of the gravel and put a 3 inch sand base in instead. I am going to take a sample of my tapwater to my fish store first thing in the morning, and I will post the results. My problem with the RO water is that it was extremely cold, any advice for warming it up? Also what should I feed him if not nightcrawlers? He has about an 11 inch disk now...I will take and post some new pics tomorrow. And thank you so much for your advice I really appreciate it.

You can keep feeding him what you have been, just not the night crawlers.

To warm up the RO water, just add an aquarium heater to it and give it some time (over night).

And keep up with the salt. It helps to detoxify the ammonia.

david is the man, and don't sweat 2 much, if you follow his advise your moto will live, they are pretty easy fish! once everything is fine, test your water for nitrates and ammonia every day, once you are consistent at low nitrate and 0 ammon your water should stay stable, also get a aqua clear 110, the more filtration the better, but don't buy anything just yet, get your moto eating and your levels where they need to be!
