PLEASE HELP: Oscar Fish Gasping Badly, Lethargic

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, my Oscar didn't get better. Kanaplex didn't seem to help. I think the disease attacked his gills. Stressgaurd probably just stimulated him. Maybe even caused pain.
He would swim around in evening and at night. In morning down on the gravel. I added salt to the tank to help breathing. Today he appeared a bit bloated. He hasn't eaten for 4 days. He has had this labored breathing for over a week. Couldn't bear to put him through more of this. Tired of trying to bomb him with drugs.
As he really showed no other signs of what it is than labored breathing and slightly whiteish pec fins. I netted him out today and put him in a bucket. Nice big 14" fish. There were goblets of blood in the bucket. From his gills?
Euthanized him with clove oil.
Now I'm going to clean out the tank and monitor the silver dollars and earth eater for a few weeks.
It's sad but I think the best thing. This disease was very sudden.

The oscar looks like it has Columnaris aka duck lips a contagious bacterial disease.
Agree with this, that it is Columnaris a bacterial disease, .and probably exacerbated by poor water quality conditions.
Columnaris bacteria love high nitrate.
Oscar come from water where nitrate is usually less than 5 ppm.
You need to up your regular water change schedule and volume, to at least 50% of the tanks volume once per week
On my 300 gal system, I try to do 30% to 40% every other day.
