My boy Rex, red tail cat, was thriving until Monday.
I have noticed red burns on his belly and tail rot.
I immediately checked the other cats in the pond but they were fine! I’ve been doing constant water changes and bought another filter.

I took Rex out and decided to quarantine him in a 70 gallon tank.I have 2 filters attached fluval fx6 and 407 constantly testing water, medicatingwith melafix and took carbon out of filters.
Tail rot, whiskers and red blotchy discoloration is still there but he isn’t as lathargic.
Any clue what this is? Can someone give an insight on what to do to make better.

What was water parameters from where it was pulled out of? I’d check the water and keep nitrates below 20ppm as much as possible.

nitrates are usually zero.
I use the api water testing kit and everything was normal, there was an ammonia spike but it was taken care of immediately and I tested for a week straight. It just seems like he’s getting worse In quarantine even with melafix and two filters and the right parameters. It’s like he’s deteriorating

What have u been feeding? Other tankmates? Cont to keep the water clean. I’d try a round of triple sulfa or Maracyn2.

It looks like it could be a bad case of ammonia burn followed by a case of external parasitic or bacterial illness.

Melafix and pimafix won't do, not that they do anything probably anyway.

At this point I'd do a MicrobeLift Broad Spectrum Disease Treatment (BSDT) and try to figure out the root cause of this occurrence.

Zero ammonia and nitrite is good; but how do you achieve zero nitrate?

You can try a salt water bath......that can kill parasites. Can you add a UV filter? What is you PH..... doesn't look like a PH problem but if it's way outta whack...maybe. Should be 6.8-7.2.

Also did you take out any carbon from your filter? If not it will take the medicine out of the water very quickly.

if its a pond anaeroboic bacteria that built up duringan ammonia spike could deplete the nitrates but the bacteria would soon die off without excess nutrients to use.

looks like ammonia burns to me. personally id just give it excellent water quality and stressguard but i dont keep fish of this calibre. if its a parasite looks like its functionality would be similar to swimmers itch. take note if you see any geese or ducks in your pond because if it is a parasite that’s likely the origin. just keep an eye on everyone else. i doubt that its anything beyond ammonia though. i dont think ive ever had a fish disease that wasnt indirectly or directly caused by a basic factor like water quality or overfeeding but thats just been my experience. maybe check its gills with a flashlight to look for any parasites.
