Please help; sand has wrecked my tank!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'd imagine the ray would feel right at home in a super cloudy tank like that considering the amazon is very murky like that i don't see anytihng wrong health wise from adding the ray before it settles but you may want to wait until it clears so you can observe it's behaviour and make sure it isn't sick or anything

Just rinse the sand properly before you put it in and change the prefilter or fine media regularly. Will be gone soon.

its called wash before dumping. never in my life have I had a very cloudy tank from putting in sand. I put playsand in my 330gal, slight slight cloudy water but that was it.

Yeah, clean the sand more before adding it.
No harm done, though. You can do a water change if you want it clear faster, or just leave it and it'll settle.

He more then likely added the sand while the tank was full and if you just dump it in there that will always be the outcome. Thats why I always drain the tank first. Ive done it full before and it got to the point that I couldn't even tell how deep the sand was and ended up making it deeper then I wanted. There are some vidoes on you tube that show you how to add sand to your tank when its full without clouding up the water.

Cheers for the replies guys I cleaned the first two bags of my sand then the last one the water was so murky I really didn't see the point in doing it! Woke up this morning and the tank is great, it is almost back to where it was with the gravel, just rang my aquatics store and fingers crossed they'll have my ray in for 12; I've been waiting 3 weeks for this, now I can't wait!
