PLEASE HELP SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY FEMALE RAY

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like a small bite to me too. My rays get it every now and then. I've seen them nip at each others tails and cause that type of small injury. Just keep an eye on it.

Bro

It is definitely not a bite. It is an infection. If not treated the tail will rot further inwards and infected part will be gone.

I have the same thinking that it was a bite when this occurred 1st time on my ray pups. I though it was a bike. By the time when i realised it was not, much portion of the tail was infected. I treated the ray but by then a bigger portion of the affected tail was gone.

To stop further infection, we may want to try this:

1. Add salt as mentioned earlier
2. Net the ray to near surface of the water with the tail end exposed to the air - drop a few drops of melafix on the affected part of the tail.
Observe the recovery for 2 to 3 days. If affected area stll not gone, repeat the procedure. It should be cured.

If you are having a com of rays, i would suggest that you apply method 2.
If you are just having a single ray, method 1 or 2 can be applied.

I have tried method 2 on my rays - so far no problem.

Regards

A little salt goes a long way. When I get problems I drop 2 to 3 tablespoons in close to the infected or wounded area and its worked every time

So you put the salt in undissolved?

don't you know salt burn up ray skin? That's why its best to dissolve with water before add it in the aquarium. I learn its the hard way myself and lucky its just a small burn.

yup! Sometimes I dissolve it in a glass and use a turkey baster to hit the spot if the wounds are bad. I never had it burn there skin but I dont use much either. You dont need to if you catch it early!

looks like every tail bite ive ever had.... i jjust upped my water changes to cure it... but salt wont hurt... add the salt.. and increase your water changes basically as many 50% changes as it takes to flush your tank...

looks like its just caught it on something or bitten as others have said . id just keep an eye on it and carry on as normal. my ray has had many similar marks on the tip of the tail .

whats in the tank with it ? what size tank / ray and decor ? ( ie whats the chances its caught it or whats it caught it on ) . i wouldnt worry . but keep an eye on it just for peace of mind .

if it gets worse then think about meds and dosing. otherwise i wouldnt dose the tank just for the sake of it .
