if its working for you I'd keep doing what you're doing. adding an air pump and stone would always be a good idea. I'd also look into other media for your can that doesn't require the packets. what are the packets you toss? that can be expensive depending.

I’m drawing a complete blank, its charcoal or something similar to that i think its like $14 for 3 packets of them they go into one of the 3 rows of filtration in the canister. One row has those little hallow looking stone things that you just rinse off. Then the other two rows I’ve been putting the packets into 2 each row.
yeah its just activated carbon. not really needed but it helps maintain clear water. the rings are bio media ceramic. I would look into http://www.swisstropicals.com/filtration-shop/poret-foam-shop/ and cut these to fit those slots the carbon uses.
I have a 406 on a 55g that has these and the bio rings along with biohome ultima media. I use these sponges in my sump also on my 240g along with bioballs and lava rock. simple, cheap and reusable.
Hey man I really appreciate all your help I’ll be ordering them if my local store doesn’t have anything like that, it will definitely save money. About a month ago I did have to bring my geophagus and red devil to the pet store as I had the dreaded fish at the top of the water and knew something was wrong. After doing testing the Nitrate level was high, Nitrite and the rest of the levels were spot on and after doing several water changes a week everything seems to be balanced again. After having my baby I wasn’t keeping up on water changes enough and knew it was my fault. Just couldn’t pinpoint if it was due to stocking, my lack of keeping up as much as I always had or combination of both.
