You don't need to convince him to keep polys. J jaws7777 will do that for you.Maybe some Kelberi peacock bass, but I will wait to hear if others agree.
I'm partial to fire eels for bottom dwellers. You could also do some bichirs, as others have mentioned, or some type of larger catfish. A ray is possible, as long as you get the smaller species, like reticulated, mini marble or hystrix. You could probably even do a pair of those.
Great tips thank you. Where can I buy those small rays in Los Angeles? Anyone knows?Maybe some Kelberi peacock bass, but I will wait to hear if others agree.

So far I'm thinking peacock bass, flagtail, jardini, datnoid, snakehead, shovelnose cat, royal loach or ray if I can find the smaller species, still open to more suggestions. Thanks everyone I am liking a new fish every time I see a pic lol. What sort of stuff? Rays, cichlids, characins or what?

I don't know if it's a good idea to have a puffer with a community of fish like flagtail, datnoid, jardini, golden archer, knife clownPuffer, Fahaka or maybe Mbu but not sure if an Mbu would fit or for how long.
