i have just found one of my lyretail guppies dead! the cherry barbs have been hassling him for a few days now, and they appear to have eaten most of his tail. i have two other lyretail guppies, one normal and one endlers variety, who i have had to isolate in my breeding trap until i can buy another tank tomorrow. it comes with a filter, but i cant work out the water volume so i can buy the right heater for it. i dont think there was anything actually wrong with the guppy, he was swimming happily yesterday, and hadnt gone a darker colour, he was almost luminous blue when i turned the lights off last night. am hoping the remaining two will be ok in the breeding trap overnight, i have taken the fry trap bit out for now. any advice would be welcome please. oh, and the tank i am buying tommorow is 22.5cm high, 24.5cm wide and 20cm deep, i need to know the volume in uk litres. i know its small, but they are only small fish, i will probably get a couple more to go in there so the two are not lonely, will probably have 5 guppies total, all male.

Why not get rid of the cherry barbs? They like to nip tails. I think the other 2 in the trap will be fine overnight. What else do you need help with?

i dont want to get rid of the cherry barbs, they are my favourite fish. thats fine, i will keep a separate tank of guppies and have slightly bigger fish in the main tank.

also, my molly is due to have her babies any time now, so i need the breeding trap for them. i have worked out what heater i need for the small tank, and i have spoken to the pet shop, i am going to get 2 more male guppies, and just keep the 4 guppies in the small tank. i really dont mind having a 2nd tank :)

I'm not too experienced with cherry barbs but the tank is only 3 gallons. Are you sure that's enough space for them?

i'm not putting the cherry barbs in the small tank, i will leave them with the bigger fish and put the guppies in the small tank. there will be 4 guppies in there
