I have a 120 gallon freshwater tank that has been up and running fine for 6 months now. The past 4 weeks I have been using prime as a conditioner when replacing water. Since I started using prime My nitrite and nitrate levels are off the charts. I am using both an API master test kit and a nutrifin mini master test kit and both are showing: 0 ammonia, over 5ppm nitrite, over 160ppm nitrate, and a ph of 8. My fish are showing NO signs of stress or anything out of the ordinary. Could these readings be caused by the prime? please help!
Darren

my set up:
120 gallon freswater
xp3 filstar
fluval fx5
2x aquaclear 110's
1 powerhead
2 bubblers

my fish:
2x electric yellows (just added and showing no signs that anything is off)
2x green terrors
1 jaguar
1 freshwater barracuda
2x firemouths
2x crayfish

I tried that already. I cut back to 1 feeding in the morning for 3 days followed by 30% water change and it still tested the same.

that seems to be alot of filters for a 120 im sure its not the prime ide try a new test kit just to be sure readings are right

Just bought a different test kit and got the exact same result. I will be taking a water sample to LFS tomorrow to check but im sure they use similar tests. Should I try test strips? That would pretty well just give me a yes or no wouldnt it?

Have you tested the water out of your tap? could be your water has high nitrates?

I would test your water outta your tap... contact your water company and ask about any changes they may have made recently... then if neither of those do it... go back to what you where useing prior... I know alot of people swear by prime... but my water has high amounts of copper and other heavy metals in it. for me personally Aquasafe is my conditioner of choice after dabbleing with others. It just works best for my water and my tanks. prime isn't any better then anyother water conditioner out there in general imo... it's just alot cheaper over-all.

I would keep doing the things you are doing if the fish are showing no signs of stress. But have you done a good gravel cleaning and when was the last time your filters were cleaned.

I tested the tap water and it is fine. I switched my conditioner to stress coat and kept up the increased water changes. Things have finally gone back to normal.
Thank you for all your advice.
