Hello; One way to get actual meat protein is to feed bits of fish filets. I have done this for a long time. I use to cut off a bit of salmon or catfish before I cooked it for myself. I fed it raw to my fish. This worked but there is a caution.
I have been informed that such filets may contain pathogens or parasites ( maybe parasite eggs?). I use to cut small chunks, enough for a feeding, wrap them in foil and freeze. I have also been informed a common household freezer likely does not get cold enough to kill off parasites or pathogens. So I stopped the practice.
There is some hope however. Apparently commercially flash frozen fish filets do get cold enough and I can buy them at a supermarket. The commercial freezers get much colder is the story.
Good luck with your fish.
