Hello, everyone. I need some help on an i.d. and possible sex of my newest fish. My brother has a lfs near him that sells adopted fish for $5, so I couldn't pass up on this fish. The previous owners had brought in two large cichlids and said that they were a pair of jack dempseys. Well, my brother immediately knew that one was a jack but that the other was something else. He sent me a picture of the fish that was a little blurry but I was almost positive it was a texas (herichthys cyanoguttatas). I told him that I wanted it, so he picked it up for me and brought it over. After a week, the fish has colored up really well and I am beginning to wonder if it isn't actually a green texas (herichthys carpintis) or some hybrid. Let me know what you guys think and I am terrible at sexing, so that would also be helpful. It is much appreciated.

p.s. - the black blotch on dorsal says female to me

The dark area in the dorsal would normally indicate female, but I suspect (as you do), it's a hybrid.
And because in hybrids sexual distinctions can be possibly skewed.......all bets are off.

I thought that may be the case too but it just seems really tall bodied to have jack dempsey but it could just be the texas traits are more dominant. Thanks for the reply

I agree. I think it's a h. Cyano x something. The spots look like both. It definitely has h. Cyano in it if it isn't a pure one. I had a pure female the spots were much smaller and on the face.
