Please I.D. These pick ups

In the first pic the fish's face looks very parachromis to me. I am no Mayan festae expert but I know Mayans have a larger spit on the tail and festae have a "y" or "4" shapes stripe by their gills, its hard to tell but from my knowledge it looks more Mayan. But like animal guy said, if the have festae and Dovii and fry, I would believe it. Are you sure it was a true festae?

The reason I doubt the guy mayans are every in vegas right now. Literally every LFS has at least one batch right now if not more. Knowing a doviixfestae seems pretty desirable he could have passed these off to make money. Here you can buy mayans for .99 cents. You cant always trust what you buy. I thought MFK was a place for conformations and opinions. No need to bring god into it. Im sure everyone has purchased a mislabeled cichlid in their past.

SA cichlids do not readily cross breed if they cross breed at all. To my knowledge there are no cases of festae crossing with anything in an aquarium. So the likely hood that this store bred a dovii and a festae are as close to 0% as you can get. Add in that these fry that are claimed to be crosses look exactly like young mayans and I think you already have your answer.

If they are crosses it is more likely a mayan x dovii cross. That could be possible, however they look like mayans to me.

Ive been seeing repeatedly that festae were not in yhe SA cross breeding rule. Heres updated pics taken today once theyve settled a little more and have grown slightly. I will continue to update with size. Im not convinced these are mayan, I bought these from a guy on craigslist only having a dovii and festae but these just look mayan. uploadfromtaptalk1366215245547.jpguploadfromtaptalk1366215275820.jpg

Im no pro, it was a feastae but I the pair was small, he said it was their first batch. I should have gotten pics, it was a male festae about 6" and female dovii right at 5" maybe smaller

Sold as Dovii x Festae so my thoughts are either Dovii x Festae or Dovii x Mayan. I see no reason to suspect another fish in play and they are not pure Mayan. F1 hybrids will look very bland and muddy. Within a batch you might get a few good looking ones but generally they will love very bland like yours does. So for now I suggest you take the sellers word on them being Dovii x Festae and just grow it out. Might turn into a very interesting fish as it grows.

I had a female festae breed with a male Midas in my tank about 4 years ago. None of the fry were saved so they all got eaten in the 180 gallon cichlid community tank they were in.
