It aint no firemouth, it's from the genus Amphilophus, which species a bit hard to tell (there are dozens of species in that genus) that all look similar when young.

I knew it wasn't a firemouth when I bought it, but I wasn't sure what it was. The guy at the store sounded pretty sure it was, and I didn't feel like argueing with him.

The above pic is a young Amphilophus sp Amarrillo, not saying it is same as yours, but using it to show what young Amphilphus look like, very similar.

I got one that looks just like that from a chain store (most likely the same one). Mine was labeled as a Firemouth too. Got mine for $1.79. Thought mine was a FH when I got it but I guess not. I'll have to try and get a photo to add.

I think it is a flowerhorn at 5 inches though color should be showing but it could be a red devil which can start with dull colors

if it is a fh it is low grade and the price would be right for a 2 inch fish

Goodness. It's a juvenile Amphilophus. Most likely it's a midas/red devil that hasn't gone through a color change yet. Not a flowerhorn, and not a firemouth.

What he said. Gad....everyone is always ready to toss out the Flowerhorn card.
