ok just thought i would clear this up, here are pictures of different colored JDs, NONE of which look like the fish the OP posted. now its possible that its a hybrid but def not a pure fish and i would stay Carpintis hybrid before i would say JD hybrid, i really dont get where everyone is getting JD from, they look nothing alike

this last one looks the closest of any of the JDs i could find to the OP's fish but it is STILL DIFFERENT!! look at the patterning and colors, they are different, i also think the face is a bit different as well, OP's fish has a more narrow mouth that tapers more while a JDs mouth is more blunt and rounded

my red texas head messed up by red devil i got same batch at the LFS and the rest of his brothers or sisters have turned red

I agree 100%. I also was confused as to why so many posters have suggested JD.

What does this thread teach you? Most people who post in ID threads have no idea. :)

It's a red texas type hybrid, like I posted in post #4.

OK. now i'm even more confused about what my fish is. LOL!!! Thanks for your help though. One of my local LFS peepz told me it was a red texas. but it's not red? do they turn red when they get bigger? weird!

IMO Red Tex hybird or failed attempt at a Red Tex either way it doesn't matter, it's a really nice looking fish. Grow it and enjoy it. It'll be and awsome display as an adult.

Who said Oscar? C'mon!

yeah this name a lot of times is a misnomer because the idea is to create a fish that will peel into red as it matures, but a great number of them never peel, its usually only the super red texas that peel to a bright red, on the regular "red texas" you will be lucky to get any kind of red at all. how big is he? but yeah thats why i usually go with calling the carpintis hybrids because they usually dont show any red on them, FH people have a weird way of naming fish...
