Iv'e been looking at Hap profiles. I'm thinkin' this is maybe a Hap 44. It is the closest I've found, but the colors seem different from other Hap 44s I am seeing. The bars have darkened up considerably though. What do you guys think?

Def. not a Hap. 44. They are Victorian cichlids and what you have is a Malawian.
My best guess would be a Placidochromis johnstoni.

Refering back to the profiles, my best guess would be that your best guess is the correct guess. Thank you!

Are these very common in the hobby?

This fish is a juvi or female Taiwan Reef from Lake Malawi

It is 5", so it's not a juvi. I looked at some pics of female Taiwan Reef females, and this fish still looks like Placidochromis johnstoni.

Hard to say. Personally I have never seen them in the hobby, stores or local breeders.
Where did you pick him up?
*Critical question, was he in a tank labeled as "Mixed African Cichlids"?
